A R RAHMAN'S CONCERT CHENNAI 29-12-12 VIDEOS

YMCA Nandanam, apart from being a reputed sports college, is also the preferred destination for a number of morning/evening walkers. If you had never been in the campus before, the organizers ensured that you took a tour of the entire place on foot, largely due to the lack of signage and proper briefing to the workforce employed for crowd management. Once you entered the concert area it seemed like a confederation of a young generation which has literally grown up dancing and humming to Rahman’s tunes. But there were also those who were in their prime age, clearly impressed by the young man’s craft. With still some time to go for the official reporting time to clock in, the place was packed, and more were on their way in.
If the crowd were distinguished by denomination and separated by barricades, they were unified by a spell of heavy rain which first began as a friendly drizzle. Not even the MIP’s were spared by the showers which proved to be the bringer of harmony or atleast the realization of how everyone was very much the one and the same under the great big sky. It was the most fitting time and place for such an episode as Rahman himself has been campaigning the same message through his side projects. This occurrence was in a sense Chennai’s own Woodstock moment.

A buzz around the venue alerted everyone’s attention towards the stage and soon thereafter the opening chants of ‘Udal Manukku Uyir Tamizhukku’ emerged from the centre. The group of backing vocalists and the backing band were finding their groove with the opening bars before Rahman appeared out of a fancy enclosure singing the anthemic ‘En Desathin Kural’ from the Tamil version of Swades, sending the crowd into raptures. There was a look of determination on ARR’s face apart from carrying the emotions of a homecoming. An equally loud cheer was reserved for Director Mani Ratnam who was shown on the big screens being seated in the audience as Rahman surged into ‘Elay Keechan’. More than a cheer, the ovation for Mani Ratnam sounded like the fans’ display of gratitude towards the film-maker for bringing Rahman on to the scene, besides bringing out the best in him. Director Shankar and Rajiv Menon’s presence was also fondly acknowledged by the crowd.
Rahman quickly dispensed himself from the singing duties and made way for Hariharan and Mano to deliver the first of four medleys of the evening. The duo hustled through numerous songs from films like Endhiran, Padayappa, Thiruda Thiruda, Iruvar, Muthu and Sivaji. While each song lasted barely a minute, the relentless changes seemed to catch even the singers short of breath in trying to keep up with the pace of the medley. Hariharan a few moments later had a ‘forgetful’ moment while performing ‘Kadhal Rojave’ along with Chitra. He labored his way through the song, singing part of it in Hindi as he couldn’t channel his thoughts to recall the Tamil words, possibly due to the tricky rearrangement of the song (something that would be a common feature of this show). Expectedly, it should be edited out of the TV telecast because it would contradict the show’s theme of featuring only Tamil songs.

Benny Dayal was the first of the young bloods to step into the spotlight, and he represented them very well in his swanky red jacket and bow-tie. He was joined by Karthik immediately and with Rahman grabbing himself a mic, tore into ‘Girlfriend’ from Boys. Chinmayi surfaced on stage to a rousing reception and her duet with Karthik would make for one of the best moments of the evening. Together they performed a rehashed reggae version of ‘Athangara Marame’ from Kizhakku Cheemayile. A splendid rearrangement delivered by a delightful performance by the two talents. The segment was yet another elaborate medley featuring songs from Indian, Alaipayudhey and a few more. A few staple Rahman Live show tunes, ‘Humma Humma’ and ‘Mustafa’, were performed in its entirety by its composer, followed by a thunderous rearrangement of ‘Nenjinille’ (Uyire) sung with sheer precision and nonchalance by Chitra. The rearrangements, by and large, were inclined towards being heavier rock influenced versions, and were well delivered with the aid of a tight drummer and two talented guitarists in Sanjeev Thomas and Keba.
In a bid to squeeze in all the favorite classics Rahman sprung up yet another medley led by Hariharan. Starting with ‘Nila Kaigiradhu’ they sang together on an uplifting version of ‘Uyire’ (Bombay). One of the surprises of the evening, in terms of song selection, was the supremely challenging ‘Thee Thee’ from Thiruda Thiruda and the crew pulled together an effervescent performance of the song. It was getting quite apparent that Rahman was going to calm things down for some time. Providing the tranquility was the songbird Chitra, flautist Naveen and Rahman himself atop a curious looking instrument that looked like an elaborate electronic pedal steel. The change up was very welcome for the ‘Marghazi Masam’. Chitra was particularly endearing as she performed songs from Kandukondein Kandukondein and Paarthale Paravasam. This worked out as a segment catered to the melody lovers.
The accordion intro was greeted with ecstasy by the crowd as they anticipated ‘Nenjukulle’ to be a part of the playlist. Shaktishree Gopalan looked to be overwhelmed by the audience’s reception and she performed the rest of the song with a sort of a nervous innocence which was charming in its own way. Rahman then took his seat behind the grand piano and played the unmistakable opening notes of ‘Adiye’. This was also probably the first time the public were getting to see Sid Sriram, and he sang like a caged-up tiger pleading, nay demanding, to be set free or else. He had his back up choir, dressed in all black, as the pillars of his performance. ‘Moongil Thottam’ and ‘Magudi’ too found their place on the set list, each delivered with the same conviction as the studio recordings.
Another noteworthy performer of the group was this relatively new and unknown young lady who’s show was as sensual as her prime skillset as she contributed to songs like ‘Irumbile’ (Endhiran) and the ironically picked ‘Hello Mr. Ethirkatchi’ (Iruvar). Rahman was peaking towards a crescendo with this segment and it virtually blew the roof off when he sang ‘Urvasi’ (Kadhalan), a song that he clearly enjoyed performing along with Benny and Naresh Iyer. For the encore he went with predictable ‘Vande Mataram’ to close the proceedings, preceded by a Tamil version of ‘Jai Ho’ that caught some people off guard.

While the show had its moments of misgivings, it was only human nature for it to happen besides imperfection being one of the thrills of witnessing a Live performance. If you were seeking mechanical precision, you’re better off listening to the studio tracks on your music players. Despite the heavy commercial presence, the substance of the set list and the intermittent weather, the show proved to be a huge success in uniting different people in the cause for promoting peace and harmony under the guise of music, making it unforgettable for numerous reasons.

KUMKI–MOVIE REVIEW

kumki-movie-audio-launch-invitation-stills021

Kumki the debut film of the Vikram Prabhu ( grand son of legend Shivaji ganesan and son of prabhu ) having pressure to perform well has done a very decent work in this venture. The film about a Elephant and its mahout and their story when they accidently happen to become an kumki to attack an wild elephant. The story goes in an very interesting manner.

The story starts with the wild Elephant ( Komban ) attacking the people of Aadhi kadu tribal village people who live there for more than 200 years, Most of the forests being hunted the elephant was forced to move to this forest. The people of the village who doesn’t want to move from their place think to hire a Kumki elephant ( an well trained elephant to attack the wild elephant ).

Vikram prabhu ( Bomman ) is a mahout and Manickam is his elephant , Thambi ramaiah is bomman’s uncle . They lead the life by the elephants work such as temple and other purposes . An incident occurs where manickam is forced to go as the kumki to Aadhi kadu where the komban’s attack is expected anytime. Bomman comes to the village and meets Lakshmi menon ( Alli ) who is the daughter of the village head and falls in love with her which makes him stay in the village. The rest of the story is about their love and Komban waiting to attack the village. Will manickam win the battle and bomman gets alli forms the end of story.

The Main asset of the film is thambi ramaiah without whom the film would not have such a great treat. He has done a very great job more than a supporting character. And the next mention would be the elephant which has been trained well ,the locations are refreshing and background music is good.

The Director has again did a very good job after the previous hit Myna but the songs are slowing down the screen play , The number of songs can be reduced. The hero and heroine have done a very good job in the film. thambi ramaiah has another chance for the best supporting role awards .

The film will be treat for the eyes which is an different film from usual  and can be rated a 4 out of 5.

That 'Kadal' is set in the backdrop of the lives of fishermen is an open secret. And fishermen are known for venturing into sea braving all odds, especially the weather conditions. So when the 'Nilam' cyclone stormed Chennai earlier this week, Mani Ratnam, who was waiting to shoot some important scenes in such climatic conditions, made use of it. "Mani Ratnam, Rajeev Menon (cinematographer) and other members of the cast and crew took it as a challenge to work during the cyclone and successfully shot the scenes near Kasimedu and Royapuram," sources said. Apparently confirming this, Aravind Samy, who is playing a crucial role in the movie, wrote on his microblogging page: "Awesome experience of shooting in cyclonic weather in the sea for a sequence in Kadal."

Rajini’s next film to be directed by Maniratnam

Even as superstar Rajini’s fans across the globe are gearing themselves to celebrate their Thalaivar’s birthday on the auspicious day of 12-12-12 (a day which occurs only once in a century), news about Rajini’s next film has trickled in. A little bird tells us that after the release of Kochadaiyan, Rajini might choose to work with Maniratnam, who had made his Thalapathy almost 2 decades back.

As reported earlier, Rajini’s Sivaji (3-D version) is slated to hit the screens worldwide on the above-said date while his animated 3-D film Kochadaiyan release could be sometimes in summer 2013. As such, speculations as to whom would Rajini be working with for his next film have already started doing rounds. Names of directors such as Murugadoss and K.V. Anand are frequently referred to in this regard. Some even mentioned the name of Manirathnam.

Sources close to the Poes Garden residence of the superstar say on condition of anonymity that Rajini has almost finalized Maniratnam as the director of his film, after the two had a tête-à-tête at the star’s house recently during when the script of the to-be-made film was discussed threadbare

Mani had earlier made the super-hit film Thalapathy in 1991. One of the songs in the film, Raakkamma Kaiya Thattu….was voted among the best ever top-10 songs via an on-line poll some time back. One of the reasons for the super-success of the films was the music of Maestro Ilaiyaraaja. However, for his new film with Rajini in the lead, Mani is likely to tope in twin-Oscar winner A.R. Rahman as the music director.

Maniratnam and Kamal Hassan think to work together after 25 years

Mani Ratnam Kamal Hassan

The 21st of this month marked completion of 25 years of  Nayagan, the 1987 Tamil film written and directed by Maniratnam. The cult classic based on the life of gangster Varadarajan Mudaliar was given pride of place in Time Magazine's 'All time 100 Best Films' for 2005. Strangely though, after this critically acclaimed project, the two movie maestros never really came together. However, all that is about to change now. We've learnt that Kamal and Mani will be reuniting to do their next film although it doesn't have anything to do with Nayagan. Rumor has it that after Nayagan’s runaway success, both actor and director became too big in stature to be accommodated in one film despite being family. Fact is, Mani is married to Kamal's elder brother Charu Haasan's daughter Suhasini. It was only when Nayakan completed a quarter of a century that Kamal and Mani spoke at length and decided their collaboration would have to happen 'now or never' . Kamal confirmed the news and said, "Mani and I did speak when Nayakan turned 25. I am not at liberty to divulge the details of our conversation . All I will say is, the answer to the question that haunts both of us . why not another film together after Nayakan ? will soon be answered. Nayakan is the most influential film of my career. I suspect Mani feels the same." We hear the upcoming film is likely to be a Hindi-Tamil bi-lingual .

conversationsmaniratnam

Maniratnam’s current project KADAL is on its finishing stage , The latest news about KADAL ‘s Music is that  Kaviperarasu Vairamuthu's special lyrics will be featured in the film songs, The director has apparently borrowed two songs from ‘A compilation of Vairamuthu’s poems’ and a song from ‘Thanneer Desam’. A.R. Rahman's songs are the major highlight of this flick.
The film has Gautham and Thulasi in lead roles. Also in the star cast are Lakshmi Manchu, Arjun, Ponvannan, Pasupathy, Thambi Ramaiah, Arvind Swamy.

MATRAAN MOVIE REVIEW

Suriya In Maatran Audio Launch Poster

The much awaited Maatran, Surya – K.V. Anand’s second work together is an full family entertainer and a treat for tamil audience. The story of conjoined twins and their life which has all the commercial elements such as Romance,Action,Emotion and Drama in perfect measure with some minor logical flaws.
The movie starts off with  Akilan and Vimalan’s birth  [Suriya]2 whose father Sachin Khedekar  is an genetic scientist who is not recognised by the government which turns him a buisinessman who creates a nutrition product ‘Energion’ and which is a big hit throughout the nation brings him name and fame. This issue gets serious when vimalan gets to know about all the secrets and he dies in an accident.
The rest of the film is about how akhilan finds out the issues and what he does to solve it along with kajal agarwal. THAANDAVAM - MOVIE REVIEW

Thaandavam , Director Vijay's much awaited venture starring Vikram is a full family commercial entertainer with story line mainly targeting revenge for an tragedy happening to his life, Vikram has played roles as an Raw officer and an blind man with echo location talent.

The film starts in London with Vikram (Kenny) a blind pianist in church who murders two white people uses santhanam's(sathyan) taxi to travel, and Nassar(Veerakathi) is incharge for the investigation of these deaths catches santhanam everytime. Amy (sarah) is miss london who meets Kenny in the church falls in love with him after some scenes, Veerakathi gets to know kenny through sarah, when sarah once gets into a trouble Kenny fights for her and saves her. Amy was shocked to see a blind man fighting later through santhanam the truth that kenny is the murderer is known. An suspense character is shown helping Kenny for the murders Lakshmi Rai (Geetha).

The film unfolds for the flash back in Delhi where Vikram (Shiva) is a RAW police officer of Indian government from Thanjavur works along with Jagapati Babu (Sharath) who s an immediate junior and best friend of Shiva.

Vikram is married to Anushka (Meenakshi) in village who is an eye surgeon whose has a mission to enlighten blind peoples life and start an eye foundation. Sharath works on a project of national security, while interrogating he is shot and shiva takes over his position for which he  moves to London searching an important evidence regarding the case, When he works on it things eventually turns against shiva and makes him a criminal for London police department. Shiva escapes and finds out the people behind these crimes a turning point in the film who have planned series of blasts in London meanwhile meenakshi who comes to london for shiva's birthday as surprise dies in the serial bombblast and shiva is blinded when trying to save her.

Then the rest of the film is on how Shiva takes revenge on them with his talent of  echo location and who lakshmi rai is and why she helps him.

This film has once again shown Vikrams extraordinary acting talents, Cinematography and screen play are awesome but the story falls short of expectation as it can be easily guessed and has a lot of flaws. G.V.Prakash kumar's 25th film once again a beautiful job by him BGM's and songs are good to hear. Director Vijay has done a good work ,keeps  the audience engaged to the film which has comedy, romance, sentiments and entertainment.

The main plus of the film would be the knowledge of Echo Location for the audience, Jagapathy babu has done a very good job ,Amy and anushka have done good jobs but lakshmi rai has not got much of scenes. santhanam scores in the first half an hour. The film can satisfy unless we don't have much of expectation.

THANDAVAM can be rated a 3 out of 5 :)

MANIRATNAM'S KADAL - Story and characters

Filmmaker Mani Ratnam has almost wrapped up his dream project Kadal with only few days of shooting left now.
Apparently yesteryear actor Karthik’s son — Gautham Karthik and Radha’s daughter — Thulasi are playing the lead roles in the movie. Though everything about Mani’s films are being done in a hush-hush manner, a close unit hand lets the cat out of the bag about the character Thulasi essays.
According to the source, Thulasi plays a challenging role of a mentally deranged girl similar to what Sri Devi did in Moondram Pirai.

Aravind Samy is doing a crucial role in 'Kadal', while Arjun will be seen as a tough Navy officer. "Like Mani Ratnam's earlier films, 'Kadal' will deal a serious issue in a touching way."

Ace filmmaker Mani Ratnam and cameraman Rajiv Menon reportedly watched the first rushes of 'Kadal' and were seen to be jubilant at the outcome. Sources say that the director wore a proud smile after being impressed with Gautham Karthik's performance.

The film also introduces Thulasi, the youngest daughter of Radha, paired opposite Gautham Karthik and it was reported earlier that Mani was overwhelmed seeing how the young girl literally transformed into her character.
The movie has a backdrop of Rameswaram fishermen and Gautham portrays the son of a fisherman.
This movie also has the the lead cast of the industry comprising of Arvind swamy,Arjun Sarja,Parthiban,Lakshmi manchu,Pasupathy
The film which has Rajiv Menon behind the camera has already been bought for Rs 25 crores by Gemini Films. Apparently, the combo of Mani and music director A.R. Rahman has already created huge musical expectations.

Billa moves to chennai for a diamond buisiness which eventually leads him to his next step of smuggling heroin with his guts and capabilty,Which gets him a place in the the team of drug mafia Abbasi (Sudhanshu Pandey). He impresses Abbasi with his Fearless attitude, Billa is sent to deal with Dimitri (Vidyut Jamal)for arms, But Billa Accepts his deal without Abbasi's consent tat makes Abbasi fearing that he would be dangerous. However, in the process, Billa is forced to kill Abbasi which gets him a permanent place in Underworld.

Billa's growth is shown in a quick song,After Which the film revolves around Dimitri and Billa & how he becomes the king of underworld by ending the lives of his enemies.

This attempt of BILLA 2 is kept sharp only for the growth of the Don there are no waste of scenes for comedy and romance, Parvathy omanakuttan does the role of Billa's niece.Unfortunately she didnot get enough space on the screenplay. There wil be bullet sounds and blood spills all over the film. The Villains Vidyut Jamwal & Sudhanshu Pandey are smart and have done a decent job.

Cinematography, Editing and Music makes the film not boring. Stunts are awesome, Atlast it is an one man show for Ajith. Ajith Fans wil have a real tret in his dialogues and acting.

Conceptually the film satisfies as a prequel but Logically has a lots of mistakes, Chakri Toleti who made a great impact through"Unnaipol Oruvan"falls a bit back in direction with this movie.

The story lacks for Thrill , Detailing and Logic but scores in screenplay which is kept sharp.

To conclude, Billa 2 will be a movie that can be watched only once , With huge the expectations the final product falls much shorter of the expectations.

Can be rated 3 out of a 5.

Samantha out of Mani's KADAL and thulasi grabs the oppurtunity

Here's a shocker if you're a Samantha fan! The actress has reportedly walked out of Mani Ratnam's film "Kadal". Although the reasons for the Samantha's exit are yet to be known, its being buzzed that the beautiful actress has opted out due to dates issue. Samantha has been doing some big ticket films in Tamil and Telugu and she might have encountered difficulties in allocating the dates to the ace director.

Samantha is part of bit budget films like Rajamouli's "Naan Ee", Gautham Menon's "Neethane En Pon Vasantham", "Seethamma Vaakitlo Sirimalle Chettu" and an untitled project with Nandini Reddy in which Siddharth plays the lead. "Kadal" is one of the much-eagerly awaited of the year, and according to sources, a considerable portion of the film has already been shot on Samantha.

We hear that the pretty actress is suffering from skin allergies caused during the shoot of Mani Ratnam’s Kadal. It seems she has been taking treatments and has been asked by the doctors to keep away from bright lights for the next three months. These health issues seems to be the reason for her opting out of Shankar’s I, which is all set to go on floor this July.

However, her sci-fi Naan Ee will hit the screens on July 6th and she still has Gautham Menon’s Neethane En Ponvasantham alongside Jiiva. Now the big question is who will replace Samantha?

"Since Thulasi is a school going girl, Mani feels that she would fit well to the role of a 15-year-old girl in Kadal," sources say, adding: "Thulasi will share the screen space with Karthik's son Gautham, who too is making his debut with this film."

so it might be thulasi starring opposite gautam  .....

AR Rahman gets doctorate of University of Miami in Ohio

AR Rahman, India’s Oscar- and Grammy-winning music composer, received Miami University’s honorary doctorate on May 5. The ceremony was held at the Yager Stadium situated near the university’s Oxford, Ohio campus. The honoured was bestowed upon him as a part of the institution’s ‘Year of the Arts’ (2011-12). He delivered the keynote address at the university’s 173rd commencement ceremony. The Slumdog Millionaire composer has been associated with the university for more than 10 years now, also being co-founder of the Global Rhythms World Music Ensemble there. In his keynote speech, Rahman gave some tips to the students on how to lead a fulfilling life and face challenges. Here are excerpts…

“Respected President Hodge, Provost Gempesaw, Dean Lentini, Dr Gene Willeke and other dear friends, 25 years ago, I would never have imagined the following:

• The US President and his family sending me personally signed invitations to come over to the White House and following up with Christmas Cards

• Getting a visa to come to the US, let alone coming over to share my love and music with Miami University

• Getting my first American Honorary Doctorate from Miami of Ohio.

I cannot believe that it is over ten years since my music and me have been associated with Miami University. I have enjoyed collaborating with your students and faculty and above all, every interaction has allowed for greater understanding, sensitivity and growth. I feel humbled by the fact that so many students here from another culture have made my music part of their lives. Learning from this experience has allowed me to gain considerable confidence in starting my own Western Classical Music Conservatory in India. Above all, there are several Miami students who have come over to assist me in making KM Music Conservatory grow in multiple ways and they have grown themselves learning from our culture back in South India.

There are many things that come to my mind and heart to share – everything matters but having engaged in a such a long term relationship with Miami University, I felt like sharing five interesting thoughts which came to me last night.

1) Learning through Travel – Keep an open mind and be ready to receive things that come along the journey – So often, we have an opinion from someone of a place or a culture before heading to a destination – each one of us are made differently – sometimes there are so many hidden truths of a place that are never revealed to us till we experience it ourselves

2) Never ever rush into Judgment – especially about people – there is always another side of a story, a good side – we must always find ways to see the beauty and value of a place or a person or an institution or an art form; half the problems for each of us can be solved if people do not rush into judgment

3) When there is a tough situation in your life, consider this idea – slow down your mind, detach yourself from the sadness and always be bold to walk the path – you will certainly find relief, solutions, breakthrough ideas, extraordinary rewards – but do not expect them soon – they will come to you at the right time because if the rewards come soon, you will not be able to handle it and could be a recipe for disaster

4) Be in touch with the poor – try to think of ways to make their lives better – think of how you can pull them up – there is a hidden virtue in doing this because time and time again, when society ignores the poor, they always perish eventually

5) To live in the umbrella of truth and honesty is so simple and easy if you think about it – having a strong ambition sometimes comes in the way of the truth. To achieve a natural balance takes a lifetime but it is so worth it. In India, we say Satyameva Jayate, which means the truth, will always triumph and in fact, that was the name of my first song collaboration with Mick Jagger from our Band Superheavy.

I wish to thank a few people who have made a significant impact in my life: My father and mother have anchored me with good values; then Mr. Mani Ratnam who is India’s noted film maker gave me my first break in the world of cinema in the film Roja. My Sufi teachers opened my consciousness and helped me discover myself. People from all around India have embraced me and my music without any discrimination and today, I find the same spirit of acceptance in Hollywood.

Music does not belong to one country or one race of people. When I started listening to Bach, I did not know what religion he was, or which country he came from. What mattered most was the purity of his works. Over the 25 years I have learnt, not merely their instrumental or vocal styles but also absorb the philosophies that have empowered their musical language. But universities can only be the starting point for a long journey ahead. You have to collect new strength now and seek the knowledge in these ancient musical cultures to see how they can give you a new identity.

This graduation day is only the first door that is going to open and show you a never-ending stairway going up. Yes, you have all the talent but the most important equipment that you need to have in order to begin the long climb is a very simple device called a ‘Smile’. Just wear it and you will see how smiles get converted to miles!”

Congratulations, AR Rahman!
